What is an orthotic?
Orthotics are devices that fit into your shoe that either provide additional comfort and support or correct abnormalities in the foot
Over the counter inserts vs. custom orthotics
Over the counter inserts
Any kind of non-prescription foot support designed to be worn inside a shoe.
These are pre-packaged, mass produced, arch supports that are not specific to
your foot. These inserts can be beneficial for the average patient, but some foot
structures require an insert that is custom to your foot. Choosing an over the
counter insert vs. a custom orthotic can be based on your diagnosis as well.
Custom inserts
Specially-made devices designed to support and comfort your feet. Prescription
orthotics are crafted for you and no one else. They match the contours of your
feet precisely and are designed for the way you move. Orthotics are only
manufactured after a podiatrist has conducted a complete evaluation of your feet,
ankles, and legs, so the orthotic can accommodate your unique foot structure
and pathology
Does insurance cover custom orthotics?
Many insurers in Ohio cover orthotic services provided by a professional.
It is important to check with your insurance provider to understand what
types of coverage you have and if there are any restrictions. Wiemken
Foot & Ankle is proud to accept insurance from most major providers.
Commonly treated diagnoses that inserts are used for:
-
Heel pain/Plantar fasciitis
-
Flat feet
-
High arched feet
-
Arthritis
-
Diabetic feet
At Wiemken Foot & Ankle we routinely recommend over the counter inserts or custom orthotics for a wide range of diagnoses. Information obtained at your visit will help determine whether an over the counter insert vs. a custom made orthotic is most beneficial in treating your symptoms.
We encourage you to bring these different inserts or shoes that you have tried to your
appointment so that we may give the best treatment recommendation.
