What is a Bunion?
Signs, symptoms and treatment options
A bunion is a deformity of the great toe joint resulting in a large and sometimes painful bump on the base of the great toe. Bunions have been reported to affect approximately ¼ of the population. Females are seen to develop bunions at a higher rate when compared to the male population. Patients experiencing these symptoms may be the result of tight fitting shoes, overall foot structure, and even genetic predisposition. These symptoms can greatly affect a patient's quality of life.
Symptoms of bunions may include:
-
Swelling, pain around the bunion site
-
Increase in redness around the bump
-
Stiffness around the big toe joint
-
Inability to fit in regular shoes
At Wiemken Foot & Ankle Clinic, our providers may take X-rays to evaluate the overall
alignment of the bones in the foot for proper diagnosis. This will help guide treatment and determine severity of the bunion.
Our providers may recommend conservative treatment or possibly surgical correction if
warranted. To learn more about your bunion and which treatment is recommended for you, please make an appointment to be seen in the clinic.
